Day 8 : Porlock to Newport (110 miles)

Day 8 complete – 110 miles, 1179m climbing – very sunny and hot. Matt travelled to …

Minehead, Woolverton, Stogursey, Bridgewater up to Highbridge, Weston-super-Mare, Congresbury, Bristol, …

past the Cliftonville Suspension Bridge, along to the Severn Bridge, over bridge into Wales and on to Chepstow, down to Caldicot, skirted Newport and down to the campsite at Ty Coch Farm, Newport which is lovely. We had a hairy journey along the A49 very narrow in places but finally got onto the M5/M4.

Apparently George decided Matt needs a rest day so we’ve decided to have 2 nights in Pembroke on the 9th and 10th Sept.

Matt will have done just under 1000 miles by that time and will be about a quarter of the way there.. George needs a bit of 1-1 time with Matt for a couple of days.

The campsites have been very good and moved a day forward .. George is really looking forward to a couple of downward dog days..

Day 7 : Bude to Porlock (80 miles)

Very misty when we got up but soon cleared to a hot sunny day with temps of 27 degs. Matt cycled 80 miles today with 1822m climbing. Matt left at 8.30 and arrived at the campsite at Porlock in Somerset at 5.15pm.

He cycled along the coastal path to Hartland, Bideford and we then had a phone call to say a spoke had broken and the spares were in the Motorhome so we met him at Asda Barnstaple so he could repair it.

He then cycled to Braunton, Ilfracombe, Combe Martin, Blackmore Gate and down to Lynton & Lynmouth. He cycled along Countisbury Hill which is 3.1km long and very steep which we can vouch for as we went the same way!

The one good thing was that he thought he then had to go up Porlock Hill but turned out it was a very steep downhill – we went on the Toll Road to avoid it as it is so steep.

Looking at ALL these lovely pictures where would you have rather been today

Day 4 : St Anns Chapel to Falmouth (78.8 miles)

Day 4 complete – 78.8 miles with 2181 metres climbing. Another challenging day with 2 ferries. Staying outside Falmouth in a field with lovely views. Dry and sunny but still a cold wind so tent for Matt again tonight.

Matt left at 8.30 and arrived about 5pm. Loads of traffic everywhere so took us quite a while in the M/H along with some scarily narrow roads!!

Day 3 : Lyme Regis to St Anns Chapel, Bigbury (81.4 miles)

Day 3 completed – 81.4 miles but ascent of 2,349 metres so a bit of a killer. He got 3 ferries today. Started at 8.30 from Lyme Regis and arrived at the campsite at St Ann’s Chapel, Bigbury at 6pm. We met him for half an hour at lunchtime at Paignton seafront.

Very windy and quite chilly today, too windy to put the awning up on the Motorhome so he’s in the tent tonight. At least it hasn’t rained yet!! Some of the Devon roads are a bit of a challenge in the Motorhome!!

Photo on Paignton seafront and one he took en route.

Day 2 : Lytchett Minster to Lyme Regis (97 Miles)

A rather gruelling day for Matt. He left Lytchett Minster at 8.15am arriving at Lyme Regis about 5pm meeting us briefly in West Bay on the way.

97 miles with 2,100M climbing and an 8 mile detour as the road was closed at Lulworth. Photo of George, Matt’s own dog and best friend with Steve Matt’s dad enjoying the view at West Bay. Jane and Steve are the equivalent of the tour de France support crew.. Travelling around in their Camper Van to provide Matt with support he needs..
